Acrimony aside, it has been an interesting debate, which I think ultimately revolves around defining what would be considered "comfortable" versus "stupidly extravagant" in the area. As others have alluded to, it is clearly possible to live in the area with an annual consisting of earnings generated from $6 to $10 million in wealth, which, at a conservative 3%/yr above inflation would be at least $180k, which is far above the median income of the region. While lots of factors can quickly eat that money up, not all of them are absolute needs. Having been in a position where I had some unexpected expenses and faced liquidity issues for about 6 months, I can say that it was pretty amazing how much fat I could cut out of my budget, when I absolutely had to.
