To me it seems the people who are pushing for reducing prison sentences and overcrowding, overlap with the people who wish this guy was left to rot.

Those are not necessarily mutually incompatible positions.  One can believe that we ought to reduce the length of incarceration specifically for non-violent drug offenses, but not for violent crimes.  Or, more specifically, that this specific sentence was too short, even if most sentences are too long.
