I can certainly imagine relatively innocent explanations of what we initially heard -- ("I was headed to bed and the cat wanted in, but then I got locked out.  So I went to several neighbors' to try to find a hammer to break out a window.  I'd been looking for one for 3 and a half hours") or even believable explanations ("I was under the influence and thought I was a merman") -- and I'd be happy if they were true.  But I'd have thought any innocent explanation would have come out immediately after Wilson was asked what happened.
