Grace Luczak and her pair partner, Felice Mueller, locked up an A-final berth in today's A/B semifinal. They seemed to stay off the gas for most of the race, content to let the Brits take a solid lead, and were dueling with South Africa in the body of the race (if they were even paying attention to RSA). I have to think that's because they're saving their strength for tomorrow--usually you'd get a day off between semis and finals, but with two days having been cancelled due to conditions, race officials have compressed the schedule--and there still might be inclement weather tomorrow, who knows. Remember that this GBR crew set the world record two years ago, so they're formidable contenders. I like the USA sandbagging to conserve energy in what could be a barnburner tomorrow. If conditions are terrible, any extra advantage will be welcome.
Elle Logan and the US women's eight watched the rest of the field duke it out in the repechage to not be excluded from the A-final (or just final since there is no B-final). Australia lost out. They'll race for medals and the continued dynastic dominance on Saturday.
Austin Hack and the US men's eight put down a great performance to win their repechage and advance to their final (also no B-final). Was the rest of the field sandbagging it? We'll see. Italy was the unlucky crew excluded by virtue of finishing last.
