Wilner's memory may be a bit defective when it comes to the defensive line. I can't find much on-the-record optimism from Feb. 2015 to Aug. 2015 from the coaches with respect to the depth. In fact, I can see a lot more on-the-record acknowledgement of its thinness, e.g.: http://www.sfgate.com/collegesports/arti...124362.php
Shaw was fairly equivocal when it came to the defensive line's incoming freshmen: http://www.espn.com/blog/pac12/post/_/id...wed-hunger
Or here's Shaw in Aug. 2015: "I think we have a lot of talent on the defensive live but it's unproven talent."

I may be being overly selective because of hindsight bias, but by Shaw's standards he's pretty withdrawn. If you know how to read between the lines -- which any experienced beat reporter should be able to do -- then I think you could forecast reasonably well how the DL turned out in 2015.
