We're going to be looking at a lot of transfer risks going forward. It will not be possible for each of Burns, Chryst, Costello, Mills, West, and whoever comes next to all be multi-year starters .
It's interesting to recap Shaw's QB recruiting.
2011 - Crower, Hogan
2012 - None (made an effort on Winston)
2013 - Burns
2014 - Chryst
2015 - None (made effort on Town, maybe Wimbush, NOT Rosen)
2016 - Costello
2017 - Mills
2018 - West
Somewhere during the 2015 recruiting cycle Shaw made some comments that he never wanted to offer more than one QB at a time, and some years one needs to take a break from recruiting a QB so that the logjam at the position wasn't too bad. This came with the insinuation that Stanford simply didn't want a QB in The Year of Rosen. Many fans went ballistic over that statement, with comments that you never knew which QBs would work out, when injuries would occur, so one should stockpile as many QBs as possible.
Now Shaw's comments about taking a break were at least somewhat disingenuous, as during both years he did not sign a QB he made at least some effort to do so. Nevertheless, he seems to have followed the rule about only offering one at a time and one can see that if you do have a successful run of signing very high profile QBs you will end up with a logjam.
Quote:QB injuries are common. Look at Kansas St last year. They lost their starting QB in the first quarter of the first game of the season. Then they soon lost their 2nd string QB.Â
The second part on KSU isn't exactly true. Ertz had won the starting job and then got immediately injured in the first game. Alex Delton, who was viewed as a promising true frosh, did get injured in game #2, but he was not the 2nd string or immediate replacement for Ertz; that was Josh Hubener. Denton had come in for a few "package"-type plays which included zero passes and four rushing attempts.
