There were 3 Pac-12 CGs hosted by the winners, right? Those all went more-or-less fine (ours had attendance issues but that was more because it was on a Friday night than anything).

That's what I'm thinking.  Campus sites for QFs mean you can basically treat it like another home game, with the playoff committee and the host school working closely to pull off the event.  I think there is a real concern about adding another week of playoff games and the effect it would have on attendance.  For me, it's already tough to rearrange my life so I can make it to a Rose Bowl.  I certainly wouldn't be able to make it work to attend a quarterfinal, semifinal, and a national championship game.  And for our fans that live in California, at least the Pac-12 title game is in our backyard.  For other conferences, and for the non-CA schools in our conference, the conference title game adds another expensive layer to the postseason.
