I don't view down votes as a sign of disrespect, I view it as a sign of disapproval of the way one has conducted oneself. I have both +'d and -'d posts here. To get a - from me, I have to think you're trolling or at least being unnecessarily combative. The opinion itself doesn't matter to me.
Now, I do agree that for the system to be in any way helpful, it would be nice to know which of our posts has generated the + or -. I feel that as it currently sits, it's too easy for us to think "This poster is in the negative? Well they don't deserve that, let me + them" or vice versa, which I think defeats the purpose.
