It appears to be current. I don't see anything that would imply a heavy-handed attempt to effect an unfriendly takeover of LSJUMB. There is an expectation that the director will "work closely with Student Affairs on many aspects of band management, including coordinating the strategic planning and development of the LSJUMB." But that seems reasonable based on recent events. Let the full time director deal with managing up the chain of administrative bureaucracy rather than expect the students to do so. On the other hand, we should pay close attention if Stanford hires Dolores Umbridge for the position.
That announcement is very, very troubling to me. I read through all the text and did not really find much to object to, until I looked at the reporting relationships.
The position will be IN the Athletics Department, with a "reporting relationship" to Student Affairs, and will report directly to the Senior Associate AD. It does NOT appear to be in the music department. From my reading of the position, it will NOT be a tenured professor who will have some security or ability to stand up the the administration. Therefore it CANNOT be an Arthur Barnes, but will be a functionary without tenure.Â
I really do like the idea of having someone who teaches and arranges music, as the text of the announcement seems to say. Why such a person would not be a tenure line faculty member in the Music department is now obvious. This is "too important" to the administration to leave it in the hands of a laissez faire faculty member. So now the Athletics Department is going into the music business.
Maybe that was already the case? But the disingenuous comparison to Arthur P Barnes is now exposed for what it is.
By the way, is Barnes still alive? His wiki doesn't say. It would be interesting to hear from him. The wiki says this:
Quote:In 2000, after three years with only a part-time director, the Stanford Band raised $1.5 million for an endowed chair in Barnes' name, The Dr. Arthur P. Barnes Endowment for the Stanford Director of Bands, to fund a full-time band director to replace Barnes
Also this:
Quote:Under his watch, he devoted most of his attention to directing Stanford's symphony and wind ensembles, while leaving the marching band almost entirely in the hands of the students.
Art Barnes never set out to 'manage' the Stanford Band. He set out to be their leader. He has evolved into being their mentor, their friend, their guide and their buffer from the University administration. And like the best leaders, he surrounded himself with some very bright people and allowed them to do their best.
