I don't think it's so much the offensive philosophy as deciphering an opposing defensive philosophy. My gut says it's probably a 70/30 effort split between reading defenses and choosing plays (I should mention I am less informed than most).Â
Another major component is that we don't have insight into how good of a QB coach Tavita Pritchard is. Some people think position coaches are glorified cheerleaders, just herding players through drills. I tend to believe that a great position coach during the week can really make a difference on game day. Luck and Hogan (likely) were probably self-starters--perhaps Pritchard isn't capable of coaching up players like Burns/Nunes/Nottingham...and perhaps Chryst as well.Â
I hope no one's written off Costello, but it bears mentioning that the brain trust that recruited and developed Burns/Chryst hasn't had a great track record. Hopefully Shaw and co. struck gold with Costello/Mills.
