I draw a distinct line between supporting the AD and supporting the University. My understanding is that the AD has it's own budget etc. and must break even on its own. I'm sure there are some accounting shennanigans that mask this actually being true, but I think that it largely is. Please dispel my idealistic view if it's really off.
At a meeting with someone from the Univeristy's business development dept last year, I informed them that I would no longer be donating any money to the University or the Stanford Fund and that any and all future donations would be to the Buck/Cardinal Club. It is the University, not the AD, that killed the Band. There are also other things the University has done around other issues that I won't get into because I think they cross the line into politics which is verboten here (something I wholeheartedly support). Suffice to say the list is long enough and substantial that I have no expectation that the University will ever fix enough of them where I would be willing to change where I give money.
I didn't get that same letter but maybe that's because I already donate enough to the AD through Buck/Cardinal that I meet their criteria.
