Same for the early 2000s. Which meant that when my mom checked the mail one afternoon, she went ballistic, and called me saying there was big news and she was on her way to get me. My immediate thought was that a relative had died and she wanted to tell me in person, so I was quasi terrified.

When I walked out of work I saw her jump out of the car waving an envelope like a mad woman. Only as I got closer could I see the word CONGRATULATIONS and realized immediately what it was. Definitely the biggest emotional swing (from terror to elation) I've ever experienced.
