I have no recollection of what my PhD program acceptance envelope looked like in 1980 (for a fall 1981 start). Probably it was large and fat, because I do remember getting a lot of info and it probably all came in one mailing.
I remember that MIT waitlisted me but made it very clear there was no real chance of getting accepted later off the waitlist.
Stanford said I was more or less guaranteed funding as either RA, TA, or fellowship all the way through, and that's how it worked out. With stipends being free of income tax back then and my cheap living quarters, I was putting money in the bank every month.
