Back in 1966 it was a fat envelope, business size, arriving April 15 or thereabouts.
My Dad was the first in our family to go to college, and I had been accepted early, with honors and scholarship money, to his alma mater (on the other side of the Bay). I actually had to turn them down in Dec and wait another four months to hear from my other colleges, including Stanford. That was, in retrospect, kind of weird, but at the time it didn't really bother me much. If I hadn't gotten into Stanford, I would have probably ended up at one of the Ivies before 59er land.
And speaking of 1959, that was the first Big Game I attended, at the age of 10, with my Dad. Dick Norman threw for 400 yards that day, and Stanford still lost on an 80-yd TD pass. There have always been divided alumni loyalties in our family, with my brother and niece and I on the Stanford side, and my dad and daughter and cousins in blue and gold, but we really don't make much of it.Â
Edit: I have to laugh that the software changed Norman's first name to Richard. also, if someone can give me a quick course in inserting a photo, thanks. I tried the "insert an image" icon but couldn't figure it out from there.
Thanks to Yvonne for the tip. I had the process backwards. Here's the 1959 Big Game program cover, that pretty much symbolizes the situation in our family:
