Many years ago, there was a ref who worked a UW-WSU game in Pullman by herself after the rest of the crew got stuck in bad weather. I wish I could remember her name because she was actually good and had a reputation for calling a fair game.  I got to talk to her a few weeks after the game and she said that she got both teams together and told them that they had to police themselves on certain kinds of calls, and that she was going to have to trust everyone. She then said that if she caught anyone cheating, she'd throw them right out.  I heard that the kids took this all to heart and that the game proceeded without a hitch - I was listening to the game on the radio and the announcers said great stuff about how that game got called.  But that was before Barlow, Palmer, etc...a different era.

I do remember that she quit as a referee not many years after, largely (as she told me) because she felt that politics was determining assignments instead of high profile games going to the 'good' officials.
