Not casting stones, because Stanley Wilson has struggled with a similar problem (perhaps without the drugs), but it is amazing to see how far the former wunderkid has fallen.

It's interesting. Mater Dei is known as 'Quarterback High' because they have had multiple Voldemort trophy winners. And they have had a number of very prominently recruited quarterbacks, including Todd Marinovich, Matt Leinart, Matt Barkley, John Huarte, Voldemort finalist Colt Brennan and Jason Forcier (at Stanford for a very short time, I think).Â

Marinovich was the first freshman to start the first game for U$C since WWII. In 1989, Marijuanovich was the AP College Freshman of the Year. Marinovich skipped numerous classes his redshirt soph season (Junior year), and he and his coach yelled at each other on national TV. He was taken ahead of Brett Favre as the 24th pick in the first round of the 1991 NFL draft. He was out of the NFL by 1994. He had substance abuse problems almost the entire way. Amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, heroin and the like. He's been arrested many times.
I've been on the Mater Dei campus when my son's high school had a volleyball tournament there. His team had four MPSF recruits (two at Stanford, one at USC, one at UC San Diego -- but only one starter among the four) and two other D-1 recruits, but they got crunched by Mater Dei which had three stars at OH, oppo and setter, all of whom were named Volleyball Mag "Fab 50" players and started for an MPSF team.
The Mater Dei campus is nothing short of amazing. It's really breathtaking. I'd say the athletic complex is the equal of San Jose State's, at least what I saw. Their trophy hall is extraordinary. It's one of only two high schools to produce multiple Hiesman trophy winners, both QBs. And yet...precisely none of Mater Dei's QBs have had NFL careers as did the best QBs to come out of SF Bay area high schools, including:
Acalanes-Lafayette (Norm Van Brocklin)
Andrew Hill (Jim McMahon)
Aptos (Trent Dilfer)
Buchser (Steve Bartkowski)
Bellarmine (Nello Falaschi --1936 All American, 3 year NFL pro bowl and Dan Pastorini)
Campbell (Craig Morton)
Carmel (Danny Holman - SJSU drafted by Pitt)
Gilroy (Jeff Garcia)
James Lick (Jim Plunkett and NCAA passing leader Chon Gallegos)
Lincoln/SF (Mike Holmgren)
Los Gatos (Trent Edwards)
Miramonte (Ken Dorsey)
Oakdale (Eddie LeBaron)
Oakland Tech (John Brodie)
Palo Alto (Jim Harbaugh)
Salinas (Nick Fales)
Santa Teresa (Rich Campbell)
Sequoia (Gary Beban)
Serra (Tom Brady and Jess Freitas)
St. Ignatius (Dan Fouts)
St. Mary's (Ivan Trebotich)
Willow Glen (Bob Berry, All-American at Oregon and longtime NFL starter)
Woodside (Don Bunce)
And that doesn't include Sean Mannion or Jared Goff...whose fathers (Jerry Goff and John Mannion) went to the same high school (San Rafael).
As for California quarterbacks in general, I realize that Western Pennsylvania and Texas produces great quarterbacks. And yet...of the 181 best NFL quarterbacks ever (based on passer rating), 45 of them came from California, led by all-time NFL passing rating leader Aaron Rodgers.
And just as an oddball aside, and because I have way too much time on my hands; Tony Lazzeri, Mark Koenig and Bob Meusel -- 3/8 of the starting 1927 Yankees were from the SF Bay Area. Lazzeri and Koenig were from San Francisco, Meusel was from San Jose. One of the starting pitchers, Dutch Ruether was from Alameda.
