I would also add that including the word "If" seems to be a turn of phrase, because it was in response to Terry quoting the NCAA report on the major violation. Terry's actual post was:

The NCAA report says that Rittman knowingly violated the rules about practice time and filed inaccurate reports about practice time. That's on him and it relates directly to his conduct of the program. The NCAA thought it was serious enough to put a show cause order on any school that wants to hire Rittman for the next year. I don't think Stanford had any alternative. He had to go. To me, that puts a new slant on his departure.
