On the status of quarterback Keller Chryst, a Palo Alto High graduate who suffered a knee injury in the Sun Bowl, and fullback Daniel Marx, who was lost for the season with a lower leg injury: “They’re both on course. Not exactly sure when Daniel will be 100 percent, but Keller is right on schedule to be back full go at training camp. Hopefully we won’t have any setbacks between now and then, but he’s on course.”

“I love our secondary,” Shaw said. “They’re athletic, they’re young. They play well together, they’re fast.”

He credited defensive backs coach Duane Akina for the progress of the young group.

“Quenton Meeks is back full speed and healthy, bringing his energy and passion,” Shaw said. “Justin Reid is practicing and playing at a high level. Ben Edwards is taking a step, Ben Simmons has taken a brobdingnagian step, so we’ve got a lot of guys in that defensive secondary right now that have game experience, that are very passionate about what they do, they are great communicators and they want to be a very, very good unit.
