I had the pleasure of watching John Elway during his sophomore through senior seasons at Stanford. His velocity was legendary, but he completed a lot of passes to different receivers, including touch passes to Darrin Nelson out of the backfield. While Elway was known for his arm, I loved watching him evade would-be tacklers behind the line of scrimmage as he kept his eyes downfield.
At least, that's how I want to remember it. Maybe someday someone will post online an extensive compilation of Elway's highlights on The Farm. Quite a few of his games were televised, which was a notable feat back in the early 1980s, so the footage is out there.

If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)
