I re-watched the game last night. On the TD that made it 28-21 with the 2 pt conversion, I actually saw something good from Vaughters. He was playing ILB. He had Maynard as he rolled out and the Safety #47 had the TE #87. As it was, #47 left #87, leaving him uncovered for the easy TD toss.
But in watching the play over again, it was clear that had #47 stayed with the TE, Maynard was going to have to throw the ball away or be sacked by Vaughters. Here's what happened...
As Maynard rolled out, at a certain point it looked like Maynard was going to run, until he realized Vaughters was going to track him down. At the instant it looked like Maynard was going to run,#47 reacted to it and left the TE. That meant #47 didn't trust Vaughters would get to Maynard in time. When Maynard saw #47 reacting to his run by leaving #87, he had enough time to make a quick toss to the uncovered TE. When #47 left #87 that put two guys going for Maynard and nobody on #87. The Safety blew it by not trusting the defensive scheme (Vaughters) and trying to cover two guys, instead of his assignment, and in so doing prevented Vaughters from being able to make a big play. You could tell Vaughters was upset #47 left #87 because he expressed frustration after the TD.
If you want a textbook example of what it means when players don't do their job and try to do too much, watch #47 on that TD.
