Important to keep in mind the distinction between revenue and non-revenue sports when thinking about coaching changes. Sure, schools will hire search firms and pay for private jets to facilitate secret interviews for football and men's basketball coaches who are still in season. In other sports, not so much. I think it's also unrealistic to expect the AD at Stanford to always have a short list of coaching candidates for all 36 sports. They may direct the sport administrator to start looking at potential candidates mid-season if the team is struggling, but I doubt a softball search would begin in earnest until Hanson was officially fired.
