Alabama did beat par and has the best score of the day by 9 strokes, but everyone is beating their earlier scores, mostly by big margins. 

You're right that Alabama's great score today is, almost certainly, too little too late.  Alabama, Michigan and kal are tied for 15th as of now, and each team ahead of them, except ASU, would stay ahead if it merely tied its own score from yesterday.
