What an unbelievable match. The journey to the win wasn't perhaps exactly what folks were expecting, but the result was the same. Some thoughts:
1. Let's all hope Taylor Davidson is OK, because she is an unbelievable competitor and she deserves to see this thing through. But even if she can't play 100%, as long as she can gut it out and play, it keeps the bottom half of our lineup intact. If she can't go, it'll be 1 - Doyle, 2 - Lord, 3 - Lampl, 4 - Arbuthnott, 5 - Higuchi, and 6 - Kimberly Yee (who played at #6 this year when Davidson was out sick; she also played a little at #6 last year).Â
2. Losing that second set just made Melissa Lord mad.Â
3. I figured that the bottom two courts would be true to how they've played all year, with Higuchi winning quickly and Arbuthnott taking her time. Nice to know they can flip the script on us!
4. Taylor Davidson lives for these moments. No other way to say it. She can be inconsistent throughout the regular season, and she can have some surprising losses to lesser players, but when the chips are down? You know she'll be there.Â
5. Can't fault Lampl for how hard she fought, obviously, but it's still disappointing to have match points on your serve and then end up losing. That's two matches in a row where Lampl was up a set and a break and couldn't close it out. Let's hope Lele and Frankie can get her back on track, as we're likely going to need a point from her today.
6. Stanford has now beaten the #2, #3, and #4 teams in the most recent ITA rankings this year, and added wins over #9 and #10. Their two losses are to #1 and #12, both on the road.Â
