Not having been an NCAA athlete, I can't speak from the inside but I would say the determining factors include:
- Conditioning. Especially at Stanford, "Turley training" is not likely the same as anything they have experienced prior to coming to the Farm
- Motivation, especially self-motivation but also motivating your teammates
- Technique. This is emphasized to a much greater degree than in HS. When the skill level of everyone around you goes up, all the little things start to matter more
- "Coachability" in some cases these players' sheer underlying talent has gotten them to where they are, but it won't get them further unless they are open to learning different things from their coaches, trusting them, listening to what they say, and recognizing that no matter how the message is delivered (sometimes harshly or poorly) the coach wants you to be successful
