From 1968-1972 he was the guy I loved to hate in the Stanford football universe. I will never forget the Stanford band playing an off key version of "The Old Gray Mare, He Ain`t What He Used To Be" in the 4th quarter when we beat hell out of USC in the Coliseum in 1971 which clearly irritated the old coach. Later on from 1972-1976 while in dental school at UCLA, I religiously looked forward to his weekly television shows on USC football which were the most entertaining broadcasts on the tube. He was always the guy I loved to hate but he was the kind of opponent that made college football fun for me. All these years later, it is practically the only sport I still am passionate about and his contribution will always be memorable. Those of you too young to remember him missed a special personality.
