I was there and certainly heard no such remarks as I walked 20 feet from him as he left the stadium.Â
Was OJ the Running back when McKay was asked isn't 30 carries a game a lot and John replied the ball isn't that heavy.
I remember the 1968 game at Stanford. OJ was held to 48 yards on 25 carries in the first half, mainly because Don Parish and Jim Kauffman ran about 3 miles sideline to sideline to drag him down from behind. That was when McKay had 2 plays -- student body left and student body right.
Then with the game on the line in the closing moments they got down to about our 5 yd line. I think it was on 4th and goal that OJ went right, then completely reversed his field. He was trapped and just about to be tackled near the left sideline when he completed the only pass of his collegiate career--a little duck to FB Dan Scott, who fell backwards into the end zone to beat us.
And the next year was Ron Ayala, so we had a lot of mojo built up for those guys by 1970.
