I also have a generally favourable opinion of the coaches across the Bay, mostly because I like coaches who realize that defenses also have an impact on the outcome of a . However, it seems impossible for anyone to have enough information yet to understand if they really are an overall upgrade, and if so how much. Certainly not anyone who is not inside the program.
On the topic of the thread more generally, yes it is likely true that Utah will not prove to be the kind of team for which a win over them would push a team into the playoff four. But that is hardly relevant for Stanford right now. Utah is clearly the best team Stanford has beaten. They have a good defense with plenty of experience, and in particular a stout front seven, though that is coupled to a below average offense. The match up, particular against their defense, is particularly tough for Stanford. Add in the road factor, the tough past few games against them, Utah coming off a bye - and it was a very good win for this team at this moment.
