In football, last names are on jerseys. (yes, WBB and MBB too, but not baseball, softball, soccer, etc.) From my very shaky recollections, I don't believe many WBB broadcasts referred to first names when the announcers weren't on first name terms with players (e.g. former Cardinal student-athletes). Maybe first names are actually a better way to refer to all athletes, assuming everyone knows who we're talking about. (Toby, Stepfan, Andrew, Christian, Bryce all work for me.)
