I can't think of anyone I know reasonably well who I call by their last name.  My brother, on the other hand, is on a "familiar last name" basis with a lot of his friends/co-workers, and a lot of them address him by his last name.  I say "familiar last name" basis, because the last name is being used much as a first name would.  Not "Mr. X" but just "X".

We are only 3 years apart in age, but it seems like we are a generation apart in some ways.
