This is what is wrong with intercollegiate athletics. However, what C.al is going through is not particularly unusual. C.al has (in the past) tried to insist that athletics NOT be subsidized with general funds. The CSU has never even attempted to make that claim. In 2016 SJSU spend $11 million of general funds on athletics, as it does every year, and combined it with $8 million of student fee money. San Diego State and Fresno State are worse. None of these schools can possible generate the TV money, gate receipts, and donor contributions necessary to create a self-sufficient program, and so they spend tax dollars and when that is not enough, charge their (largely) working class students big fees to pay for programs they seldom turn out to watch.
Before now, C.al has been "responsible" compared with the CSU schools, spending $4.4 million of general funds and less than half a million of student fees. Looks like that is about to change.
