the additional housing over the years has probably been a net reducer of traffic. Back when I was an undergrad most undergrads spent a year off campus due to too few dorms. Now it seems the only undergrads who live off campus choose to do so.
I think the same has also been true for graduate housing.
The faculty/staff housing at El Camino and Stanford ave was certainly a brobdingnagian benefit to those who live there.
Adding more on campus living accommodations seems like a good thing to me.
