I just replayed the UW game and studied each of our defensive players on every play.Â
#15 had been improving over the last few games, but had a terrible game. He didn't attack the plays by closing ground and taking on blocks. In fact, he looks like he goes out of his way to avoid contact. However, he frequently shows up after the tackle is made and celebrates like he did something great.
#20 had a some big plays, but has the opposite problem. He tends to commit too soon and frequently over-pursues plays. Several of Gaskin's big gains were the result of his taking himself out of the play. He makes up for this problem with speed, athleticism, and relentlessness.
Phillips had an excellent game. He was the reason Gaskin was stopped short on that big 4th down play. He won't get credited for the tackle, but he plugged the hole and forced Gaskin to try to find daylight elsewhere.
