He has interviewed for some of those jobs, but wont discuss how close he has come to leaving Stanford or which school or pro team has tendered the offers.
For me, its always been: Dont mess with happy, he said. I really feel like my next step is to be a head coach. I dont feel any need to take an offensive-line job in the NFL for just a little bit more money. I dont feel like that helps me towards my goal. I dont feel like taking another college job as a coordinator helps me towards my goal.

I love that quote. When other programs want to interview your coordinators for head coaching jobs, you're doing something right. I have a feeling he wouldn't leave for just any head coaching job, either, knowing how quickly you can go from hero to goat. And it sends the right message to the program that hires him, too--this is no job-hopper. Once he finds that right fit, he'll be inclined to stick with you for the long term.Â
He'll never be the sexy pick, though, which probably factors into why he hasn't become a head coach. You'd need a place that isn't concerned with sexy, doesn't have outsized expectations, and mainly just wants a solid guy that will run a clean and respectable program. Iowa once Ferentz leaves, perhaps?
