...and the answer is...Andrew Luck!  8.24 in 2010.  The next best modern runner in yards per attempt is Anthony Bookman in 1997 with 6.56, then Darrin Nelson in 1978 with 6.34, and only then do we come to Christian McCaffrey in 2016 with 6.335.

I would not have guessed this.  I watched Nelson but not Bookman.  I would guess that Nelson got a lot more 10-20 yard runs than McCaffrey and Love but fewer home runs.  That is a guess, though.
