Happy Thanksgiving to all the posters on the Cardboard!
I didn't get a chance to watch the game, but from reading these posts and from looking at the box score:
It's very good to see that we scored 79 points with two quarters where we had 20+ points, though the dip in the 3rd quarter was annoying and a little disturbing that we let them back in the game. We did bounce back in the last 10 and stomp out any hope of a rally by Kent State.
Marta attempted 8 shots, including 4 long range jumpers? Wow, that must be a record for her in college, though it sounds like she disappeared again after the 1st quarter. Anybody who was able to watch figured out why she was so aggressive in the first 10 and then went back to her old ways? Plus she nearly had a triple-double with 10 pts, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Interesting to see Marta grab 8 rebounds. Also, it seems that Marta played nearly the whole game. I think if Tara demonstrates to Marta that her playing time might be more contingent on her willingness to shoot the ball herself, then that would be a great incentive for her to be more of an offensive threat and make it more like 5-on-5 rather than 4-on-5.
DiJonai seems like the real deal, leading the team with 24 points. Taking away her 3 pt shots and attempts, she was a perfect 8/8 from inside the arc and had a double-double with 10 rebounds. It seems to me that she plays a similar game to Brit in many ways. It will be interesting to see how she and Brit will play together once McPhee comes back from her injury. Hopefully the sum of the two will be greater than either one individually and they will be a handful for defenses to handle.
It was great to see Alanna bounce back and produce a solid 15 pts on 7/11 shooting, though the 4 turnovers are a little concerning. We need her to provide the another anchor in the lineup to complement DiJonai and Brit as the other players develop.
Also great to see Nadia come back to play significant minutes and contribute 11 pts on 4/6 shooting, including 3/3 from inside the arc. Though it seems just based on the minutes played, Fingall is taking minutes away from Maya. I wish we can put both of them in for significant minutes.
The other point guards (Kiana, Alexa and Anna) combined for a relatively quiet 7 points and 3 assists between the three of them.
In a surprise (to us, though Belmont may be a quality team), we will not have a chance to avenge last year's loss to Gonzaga, but will instead face Belmont tomorrow in the semis with a chance to face Ohio State again Saturday evening.
