A rough and rugged match, with the Chanticleers giving Stanford everything it could handle.
Coastal had the advantage in the first half, but a brilliant run by Bryce Marion led to a PK converted by Tanner Beeson about 5 minutes into the second half. Foster Langsdorf put the cherry on with a breakaway finish with about 45 seconds left, and Stanford's defense AGAIN held a clean sheet.
For those of you counting, Stanford has not been scored on in the NCAA tournament since the quarterfinals. In 2015. That's 9 full matches, with 4 that went to PKs, without allowing a run of play goal.
That will be tested next weekend in Winston-Salem, against (say it with me again for the third year in a row) the #1 Wake Forest Demon Deacons. That may sound familiar to you, and should. Stanford beat #1 Wake Forest in, yes, that quarterfinal in 2015 in Winston-Salem, then beat them again as the #1 team in the championship game last season.
I don't think the Deacs wanted to see us again.
More in a moment. (EDIT: Okay, more after the men's b-ball game. Want to see if they can rally, but given the short bench and lack of recovery time in this tournament, that's going to be tough).
