Forget about genuine culpability for putting the ship on the rocks.  Garret had to go because USC is going up against the NCAA to get the penalties reduced.   The trick is how to admit no guilt while at the same time being seen clearing the decks of the guys who brought on this mess.   So Mike Garret will "retire" with a minimum of comment other than that required to maintain the facade.   Mr. Clean comes in and he\'s the new face of  USC athletics.

This is an institution with an inability to control their football factory.   Could you imagine if they kept Garrett and something else happened?  USC football is the biggest show in a town and will continue to best show in town during the 2 year probation.  The town just happens to be a major media market with agents all over the place, so it is easy to imagine that something else could happen.

At least this way USC can point to this as an example of their efforts to try to regain control.
