I don't follow the men's team as closely as I do the women's team, for the simple reason they don't win as much, but this year looks promising. Starting the year ranked #13, the Cardinal men have climbed to #10 on the strength of winning their ITA Kick-Off "regional" at Berkeley, beating Oregon and #22 Tulane (who beat Cal in an upset) handily. That got them a spot in the national indoor championships in a couple of weeks in Seattle.
Up next are matches against #5 USC and #6 UCLA this weekend, both at Taube, thankfully. We play USC today at 3:00pm PT, and UCLA tomorrow at 12:00pm PT. I'm not overly optimistic (USC has 5 ranked singles players to our 1, and UCLA has 3, including the overall #1), but I'll be keeping an eye out. Live scoring and streaming available at http://streamingtennis.com/Cardinal/. If Stanford men's tennis is to return to the pinnacle of the sport it occupied before the 2000s, these are the tough matches you have to find a way to win.Â
