Incredibly disappointing way to go out. This team was playing as well as anyone in the country three months ago but steadily declined from there. Even still, I didn’t expect to lose to an Ole Miss team that needed to upset Duke just to make the second round.
Overall, still pleased with how Goldstein has righted the ship since taking over for Whitlinger, but there will be lots of questions entering next year. Losing Fawcett will obviously be a big hole to fill as will Fomba and Wilczynski who were consistent performers at #4 and #5, respectively (all three won today). I also wouldn’t be shocked if Geller reconsiders going pro. No inside info but he entered Stanford as the top ranked junior in the world and many were surprised that he chose to play college tennis in the first place. He clearly regressed over the course of the year; you have to wonder if he decides that college tennis simply isn’t for him.
On the bright side, the incoming recruiting class includes two more blue chips to go along with two blue chip freshman who didn’t see much action in singles this year. In particular, I’d expect Timothy Sah to play a much bigger role after mainly playing #3 doubles this season.
Let’s hope the women can carry the torch in Winston-Salem.
