Hey guys, I know you all are probably ready to move on past ND and get ready for Utah, but wanted to wrap it up with a few thoughts.
That was a very physical game. Hopefully Love is ok for you guys. We lost our LG for the rest of the season, MLB broke a bone in his hand (hes going to try and continue playing), RB hurt his ankle.. we took a beating.
I think part of what stanford faced was the letdown after coming off an emotional Oregon game, going on the road again. That was a tough spot to be in. I was very impressed with what i saw from ND. Book proved a lot to me, he is ready to be a starter at a high level. Dexter williams looked much improved.
In my opinion, which as i have always said, doesn't mean anything.
ND Offense/Stanford Defense
Stanfords Defense is tough, but they just got worn down by the end of the game. They gave up a lot of yards early, but the score held close, the dam just broke near the end.
ND Defense/Stanford Offense
ND's defense line was just too fast for your o line. And our depth allowed us to keep pressure on you the entire game. Even with our 2nd round of guys were in, they didn't necessarily get sacks, but it just didn't give time for your O line to rest. I think had a little time been given, there were opportunities to move the ball through the air, there was just no time.
Special Teams
Went about like i thought, great legs on the field, nothing ground breaking in the returns. Was disappointed ND's kicker missed that long one.
X Factors
ND was able to move the ball around and not stay limited to depending on one or two players. With the pressure from the defensive line, Love and your WR's were just too limited. It sounds like the crowd was good. I thought the reffing was so so. I don't know what is happening this year, but holding calls in the middle have been garbage, both for and against ND.
Coaching
For the first time in awhile, I feel like ND out coached a good team. I felt like Shaw was tentative and thought that the normal stanford grind it out way would prove to be successful. which to be fair, it was a 1 score game at the end of the third. I am sure he felt like it would finally break ND. But i was watching the stats throughout the game, and even those the score was close, the stats just weren't showing any progress. And instead of it breaking in his favor in the 4th, it broke the other way. For whatever reason, Kelly/Long can better gameplan for Book. He is obviously pretty good, but they could not find a way to use BW's strengths, so this is how ND will move forward.
Good luck the rest of the year, thanks for entertaining for me a couple weeks. I see at least 6 more wins on Stanfords schedule. The big one obviously is Washington. If you guys can win that one, winning the PAC12 should be a done deal, don't see anyone coming out of the South being able to beat you.
Thanks and good luck.
