cctop, you must be a youngster.  That's one of many Elway famous tosses.  It's legendary in many ways.  The defender is none other than Ronnie Lott.   He was quoted back then as saying that he felt there was no way a QB could make that long a throw, and then he saw the ball being howitzer'd and thought, "Oh s***" .

The very first catch in that YouTube clip was in the Bluebonnet Bowl, in the old Astrodome, on 12/31/1978 which I witnessed in person. The Daily article following that game quoted Margerum as telling Steve Dils in the huddle that he could get free on a double move, a shake-slant-shake.  That was one of Margerum's talents - his ability to get open.
