Margerum wasn't that fast. I was there when he ran a couple of 4.7s for NFL scouts. He had a great vertical jump and a deformed finger that he claimed helped him to catch the ball. Also very strong, he could BP 350 lbs. at a body weight of about 180. Crazy fearless, he used to windsurf under the GG Bridge.

Ken Margerum was not that fast?
Maybe not on that day running the 40 for NFL scouts. Margerum placed 2nd in California in the 120 high hurdles with a time of 13.78. That's the equivalent of a 13.81 time in the 110 high hurdles. That would be the second fastest time ever for a Stanford hurdler. He also ran a 10.94 time in the 100 meter dash. He also won the CIF title in the triple jump.
He was a member of one of Stanford's all-time best 4x100 meter relay teams in 1978 along with James Lofton, Darrin Nelson and Gordon Banks.
He used to wear black high top shoes when he was in the NFL because they made him look slower.
He had track speed and more importantly he had football speed.

Speaking of speed, which former Stanford WR ran the nation's fastest 100 meters while in HS?
