The speculation about Tara, I have learned from past experience, is good for nothing. People wonder about her retirement periodically--before she signs a new contract, whenever a top assistant goes interviewing elsewhere, whenever a top recruit turns us down. I'm sure other younger coaches raise the issue when trying to pry recruits away from us, and they probably plant rumors that spread for a while before being tamped down. Pivec turned us down during the midst of such speculation a few years ago-not saying it mattered necessarily, but I think she made some sort of statement about being somewhere where the coaching would be stable for four years. Well, I think it highly likely that Pivec will graduate while Tara is still coach at Stanford.
Tara will continue to coach as long as she is having fun doing it. Even Tara doesn't know when that will come to an end. All the speculation, therefore, is moot. Tara seems to be having a good time, still, and she has a lot to look forward to. Personally, I'd like to see her pass Pat's wins--she is about 2-3 seasons away and this would also mean passing 1100--and I'd like to see her keep going longer than the younger Geno. But that is the fan in me talking.
