Looking at the record book, our focus on the distance races stands out when looking at the top 10 all time. In the shorter distances a lot more of the top 10 times include guys who ran them 40 or more years ago. I remember sitting in the stands watching Ernie Cunliff try and break the 4.00 barrier on the old stadium track. You have to wonder what guys like he, Lofton, and Questadt would have run on modern surfaces. Lofton's 200 meter record is now over 40 years old. Lofton was not only a gifted receiver he was one of the best long jumpers and sprinters Stanford has ever had. The length of time since he raced is testimony to his ability to run very fast on what would be considered very poor surfaces today.
