Incidentally: when did Stanford become the Cardinal instead of Cardinals? I found it so jarring to read an article in the Daily that kept referring to us as the "Cards" as if we were a football team in Arizona or a basketball team in Kentucky. I've spent my whole adult life chiding people for calling us that, so WTF?!

According to this article, the switch from "Cardinals" to "Cardinal" was in November 1981:

I vaguely remember that edict coming out. Many of us ignored it because we preferred "Robber Barons."
