Does anyone happen to know what is behind this statement in the article?

She shot to fame because of a viral video, one in which she performed a talented act and earned her institution as well as the NCAA money.

How did the NCAA earn money?
Was it direct, like ad revenue from twitter views?
Was it indirect, something like more people eventually showing up and paying admission for the NCAA Gymnastic Championships?

As always, I sure wish people on either side of this issue would recognize that their position has its complications and downsides even if ultimately the best answer ... not that that happens for any issue in society.
