What is actually pretty basic is that you believe that Shaw's formula is wrong, and he doesn't. For better or worse, AFAIK there is no way to prove that your formula is better than his in general, and certainly not in any particular game. As it happens, I agree with you. I would have run twice. It burns up more time and you kick the same field goal. However, if the pass on second down works, game over.

Why do you say "game over?"  is there some reason Cal wouldn't have scored the TD it did with more time on the clock to do so?
