I understand that coaches have to be silent about recruits, but they can talk about the progress of players already on the roster. While coaches may not want to come out and be critical of any particular player publicly (a position I think is absolutely appropriate at the college level), they might be willing to point to some people they are particularly excited about, or who they think made exceptional progress over the course of the season. Something like this quote from an article in the Chronicle, Jan. 4.
"Ty Montgomery should be ready for stardom at one wide receiver position, and the other starter may well be 26-year-old Jordan Pratt, currently a redshirt freshman. "We haven't been able to cover him in practice all year," outside linebackers coach Lance Anderson said."
Granted, reporters on the Stanford Daily are not professionals, but I can recall as a student reporter calling the campus police, faculty, administrators, etc.Â
