Great defense, rusty offense so far, which I blame on the long layoff. I hate the 2 week finals break every year. Why not play one game over the weekend between dead week and finals to keep the momentum going?
Ummmm because they are Stanford students.
Dead week classes are not the challenge. So the week and weekend are not that different.
However to prepare for finals in classes many athletes need the two weeks to focus on competing against the other Stanford students.
The momentum the Stanford AD the wants to maintain is that near 100% graduation rate. That would be harder in hoops if the fall quarter is not protected.
Remember the NCAA tournaments clash with the winter quarter end so hoops players often take heavier loads in this quarter.
FWIW it is not really rust that is the factor. Often it is sleep deprivation. They likely will be rested and better on the court in a day or two.
You probably wouldn’t want to see a game in that weekend. They would be vulnerable to upsets, injuries and overall sub par play. Sleep deprivation has a profound impact on athletic performance.
