I wonder about that. I'm thinking Occam's Razor. Pillar hit 21 HRs -- in 645 plate appearances. He had the second worst on base percentage in the NL. He ranked 12th out of 14 centerfielders.
Scout projects Pillar to be the #82 ranked outfielder next year. They're projecting 18 HRs, 67 RBIs, 65 runs, 18 walks, 13 SBs if he plays 158 games.
And he'll be 31. I think the answer is simple. He wasn't worth $10 million. A 1.0 WAR is worth about $3 - $4 million on the open market, and certainly not $10 mms.
